How to Winterize AC Vents

How to Winterize AC Vents thumbnail
Winterizing your air conditioning vents will benefit you greatly in cold weather when the AC is not in use.

You likely don't use your air conditioning much during the winter unless you live in a very hot climate. Central air conditioning systems distribute their cool air through a system of ducts that help the air flow through the building. Those ducts are useful during the summer but they can also spread cool drafts through the home during winter when it is much colder outside. Winterizing your AC vents, the covers that protect the duct openings, can help reduce heat loss in the home and make your house more heat-efficient when you need it most. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Vacuum the dust and dirt out of the vents that has accumulated there from when the AC was in use. This helps prevent it from spreading throughout the house and can reduce allergies during the winter when a home is not receiving the usual amount of airflow.

    • 2

Check each of your vents to ensure they open and close properly before the temperature starts to drop. If a vent won't close completely, replace it with one that does.

    • 3

Close your vents once the outside temperature drops below your comfort level and you know you won't be using the air conditioner anymore for a while.

    • 4

Place vent covers over your vents for added insulation and protection when the vents aren't in use.
