How to Find Out What Size Tires I Can Put on My Car thumbnail
All tires have the size printed on the sidewall.

The tires you put on your car must match your wheel's rim diameter, whether steel or alloy. While the tire size can be found in several places, reading the code can prove a bit more difficult than locating it. Know where to find the tire size and how to read the tire code so you can replace them with the right set.

Instructions

    • 1

Look at the sidewall of your tire. Locate the code that usually beings with a "P," which signifies a passenger tire or an "LT," which signifies a light truck tire, although there may be no letter at all. The letter is followed by the tire width, which is three digits long, a slash, and two more digits, which is the aspect ratio.

    • 2

Write down the two numbers after the "R," which stands for radial construction and follows the aspect ratio. The two following numbers are the size of your tire and wheel, which can be as low as 13 inches or may go over 20 inches.

    • 3

Find the tire code in the driver's-side door jamb if the tire is worn and the code is not visible on it. Locate the vehicle identification number (VIN) on the door-jamb sticker and look for the tire description. You can also find the tire code in your owner's manual.
