The Texas Department of Public Safety, also known as the Texas DPS, is responsible for an assortment of duties, including law enforcement and maintaining vehicle and driver records. The driver license division is the branch of the DPS that you must contact to get a copy of Texas driver records. Retrieving driver records from the DPS is not difficult, and it can be done at any driver license division office.

      Locate a Texas DPS driver's license office. The DPS has numerous offices throughout the state. Go to www.txdps.state.tx.us and click on "Driver License Office Locations" to find the office nearest you.

      Obtain form DR-1, which is an application for a copy of the driver's record. You can get this in person at any DPS driver's license office.

      Fill out the form. Form DR-1 requires you to include information such as your name, contact information, the name of the person whose records you are requesting and the type of records you are requesting.

      Return the completed form to any DPS driver's license office.

      Pay the fee. You must pay a fee based on the kind of records you request. For example, date of birth, license status and latest address has a $4 fee. Date of birth, license status, list of all crashes, violations and suspensions, and a certified abstract of the complete driver's record is $20.
