How to Get a Lost Password

How to Get a Lost Password thumbnail
Most online programs offer a way to retrieve or create a new password.

Use a password to keep information safe from users other than yourself. An application or program asks you to create a password to help identity who you are. A secure password keeps others from accessing your online accounts from bank statements and accounts to YouTube Accounts. Choose passwords that are not obvious to others, yet something easily remembered. If you do forget your password, some programs give you the option of retrieving it or creating a new one.

Instructions

  1. Retrieve Password

    • 1

Check your program and make sure it can show or send you your lost password. There is usually a link on the login screen that says "Forgot Password." If it's there or a variation of it, click on it.

    • 2

Enter any information they may ask you. This could be your user name or email address. For programs that hold important data, a security question you might have set up will be asked along with other identification such as your social security number.

    • 3

Choose how you want to get your password. Programs that have this option will either show you your password right away or send it to you to retrieve later. The choice is yours and either option will work. If sent, just go to the email account that you gave them to view your password.

    Set New Password

    • 4

Go to the secure website's login page for which you've lost your password. Select "Forgot Password" in the appropriate location on the screen. A validation code will be mailed to your personal email.

    • 5

Review your email for the new validation code. Double-click on the link in the email to go back to the secure website.

    • 6

Enter the validation code where required. A new email will be sent.

    • 7

Check email again and double-click on the link from the newly sent email.

    • 8

Enter a new password in the box provided. Confirm entry into the second box and log back into the secure website.
