How to Set Up Unmountable Boot Volume on XP

A boot volume (partition) considered unmountable by the Windows XP operating system is one containing a file system that is not recognized by Windows XP, such as Linux's EXT3 file system. This prevents you from reading or writing files to the drive from within Windows XP. Solve this problem by setting up a disk partition file system that XP will recognize.

Instructions

    • 1

      Click "Start" and right-click "Computer."

    • 2

Click "Manage" and click "Disk Management."

    • 3

Right-click the unknown partition and click "Format."

    • 4

Select "NTFS" from the file system menu and press "Start" to set up the partition for XP.
