How to Care for a Hairbrush

Make regular brush cleaning a habit for a healthier head of hair.

Using the right hair tools and styling products can make or break your tresses. While most of us take the time to clean and style our hair, we tend to pay less attention to caring for our hairbrushes. Regularly cleaning your brushes and replacing them when needed should maintain the brushes' original condition. This will keep your locks clean and protect them from damage. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Remove all strands of hair from your brush. Use the thin, pointed handle of the comb to lift any stragglers that have molded to the brush; or use a wide-toothed comb to brush through the bristles.

    • 2

Dip your hairbrush into a mix of room temperature water and shampoo. Swirl the brush around to clean bristles. Do not leave the brush to soak in the soapy solution, as this can weaken the bristles and eventually lead to breakage. Use a clean toothbrush to lightly scrub off any remaining dirt or oil left between the bristles.

    • 3

Rinse the hairbrush thoroughly under the faucet. Shake the brush to get rid of any excess water on the bristles and use a towel to dry the handle and ends of the brush. Set the brush down on a towel and let air dry for at least an hour before using.

    • 4

Clean your hairbrush once per month. Those with oily hair should wash their brush more often, at least weekly. You should also check your brush from time to time to make sure there are no split bristles. When you notice either split or worn bristles, these are usually signs that it's time to replace the brush.

Tips & Warnings

  • Ask your hair stylist or pharmacist for advice on the best kind of hairbrush to use for your particular hair type and styling preferences. For just about all hair types, brushes with natural or nylon bristles are recommended.

  • Hair care professionals advocate using a quality shampoo and conditioner along with cleaning your brush regularly to help ensure the health of your hair.
