1
Open Microsoft Word. To check grammar on an existing document, click the Office button in the top-left corner of the screen. Select "Open" and browse to the document. Double-click the file and it opens in a new Word window.
-
2
Scroll through the document and check for any words, sentences, phrases or paragraphs showing green squiggles under the words. Your color may be different depending on whether you changed any settings. This indicates Word has found inconsistency in the grammar.

3
Right-click anywhere on the green underlined area to see a pop-up menu of Word's suggested grammar replacement. This isn't always the correct substitution, so consider Word's suggestions carefully. To replace your grammar with Word's, click one of the options in the pop-up menu. To leave your grammar as it is, click the "Ignore Once" option on the menu.
-
4
Click the "Grammar" link in the menu to open the "Grammar" window, where you can get more information about why Word thinks the grammar is incorrect and suggestions to replace it.
-
5
Click the "Review" tab at the top of the screen. Click the "Spelling & Grammar" button, the first option on the ribbon/toolbar below the tab. This opens the "Spelling & Grammar" window with the first incorrect grammar Word finds. Make any corrections, then click the "Next Sentence" button.
To skip over grammar instances, click "Ignore Once" for Word to skip it in that occurrence or click "Ignore Rule" to skip it each time, which may be beneficial if you have proper nouns such as company names specifically spelled incorrectly due to branding, for example.
