How to Increase the AM Radio Reception in a Car
The radio has long been the constant companion of the daily commuter and the long-range motorist. Reception, however, is not always as consistent. With its weaker signal, AM listeners often find themselves trying to make out their favorite talk show or music through waves of static, especially when driving near tall buildings.

1
Turn off any cell phones, MP3 players, laptops, PDAs, personal video players or anything else that runs on electricity in the car. Any electronic device can interfere with the reception of radio signals.
-
2
Install an HD Radio. High-definition radios are relatively inexpensive and pick up cleaner signals from both FM and AM stations.

3
Move the antenna away from the engine. If your vehicle's antenna is not movable, there are many mountable antennas available for a low price. The engine's electrical output can interfere with the signal just like any personal electronic devices you have, so moving the antenna away from it can help boost your signal.

Tips & Warnings
If you install an HD Radio or an antenna (or have a professional install one), make sure the wiring stays as far away from electrical wiring as possible. Electrical wiring can interfere with the signal as it travels through the audio cables.
