How to Train to Be a Steam Locomotive Engineer
Steam locomotives, though not as commonly used as they once were, are still a part of the American railroad system. If you want to become an engineer on a steam locomotive then you're going to have to go through three to 12 months of training under a more experienced superior according to Earn My Degree. However, you first need to find an open position on a steam locomotive if you want to get the necessary training.

Find an open position on a steam locomotive. It isn't required that a train operator have more than a high school diploma in some positions; however, the requirements of the job are left up to the hiring company. Some companies may want engineers who have previous experience on other trains, an associate's degree or even a bachelor's degree. The requirements for hiring vary, but the more education you have, generally the better your shot you have getting the position you want.

Apply for the open position as a steam locomotive engineer. In order for you to begin training as a locomotive engineer of any type, you need to be hired first. This job isn't like being a welder or a doctor where you can get a degree that teaches you the skills beforehand. The railroad trains its own applicants.

Begin training. Once you've been hired as a locomotive engineer you'll begin your training. It will likely last a minimum of three months, but it could take as long as a year for you to really learn the ins and outs of your job as an engineer to the point that you can run a train on your own.
