The Georgia PSC issues the certification needed for moving companies.

The state of Georgia realizes how overwhelming the experience of moving can be for homeowners, and has instituted protective measures, registration and licensing requirements for new moving companies. As of July 1, 2005, all Georgia moving companies must obtain licensing from the Georgia Public Service Commission (PSC). Every new moving company must obtain a Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity from the PSC. Along with the PSC certificate, there are other state-required registrations for moving companies.

Instructions

    • 1

Register the company with the Georgia secretary of state (SOS), which is responsible for the registration of all new businesses in Georgia. New businesses must file articles of incorporation with the SOS and as of 2010 submit a fee of $100 with the registration application. A feature on the SOS website allows you to register your company online.

Complete and submit form TR0006 to the PSC. The Public Service Commission is responsible for granting authority to moving companies. The Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity is issued to all new moving companies upon the completion and submission of the TR0006 application form. This certification is for companies that are transporting items from one household to another. Registration takes 6 to 8 weeks, and new authority is granted annually if the public need is determined by the commission.

    • 3

Complete and submit form IR-1 for a vehicle registration stamp to the Georgia Public Service Commission. Each work vehicle owned by the company must have annual vehicle registration stamps issued. As of 2010, an annual fee of $5 is required for vehicle stamps.

    • 4

Obtain a Motor Carrier of Property Permit from the Georgia Department of Revenue (DOR). If your company intends to perform office moves, the Motor Carrier of Property Permit is required by Georgia law. The Motor Vehicle Division of the DOR is responsible for processing the application for this permit.

Tips & Warnings

  • The state of Georgia requires moving companies to maintain liability insurance coverage for the business. This assures that the items transported are insured.

  • If trucks with air brakes will be used, drivers need to have commercial driver's licenses with air brake certification.

  • While the Georgia PSC has no requirement for background checks, it is a good idea to check the criminal history of all potential employees before they are hired.
