Begin a new career as a certified nurse assistant.

If you desire to become a certified nurse assistant but lack the means to pay for tuition, you may be able to qualify for free training through the Rochester Educational Opportunity Center. The center is operated under the auspices of Brockport College and provides training free of cost or obligation to those who qualify. The CNA program is eight weeks long and designed to prepare you for the New York State certification exam. The program will prepare you to competently enter the health care field, and the center will assist you in finding employment.

      Contact the Rochester Employment Opportunity Center located at 305 Andrews St., Rochester, New York 14604, (telephone number 585-232-2730) and arrange for an interview with a counselor. Discuss arrangements for taking the Test for Adult Basic Education (TABE) and a physical exam.

      Gather together your high school diploma or GED and two reference letters advocating for your acceptance into the program. The letters should be prepared by two respected individuals, preferably professionals.

      Take the TABE test and score a minimum of a 7.5 grade reading level and a sixth-grade math level.
