Even if you don't have a cell phone, you can still send a text message to other cell phones.

Even if you do not own a cell phone, you can still send a text message to a cell phone user. Text messages can be sent from an e-mail account to a cell phone. The text message from an e-mail account is received the same way as a message from another cell phone. Sending a text message from your e-mail account does not cost you, but the recipient may be charged if their phone plan does not include text messaging.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the recipient's cell phone service provider by using the carrier look-up tool on Fone Finder (see Resources). Enter the recipient's phone number, then click "Search By Number."

    • 2

Locate the recipient's mobile gateway on Email Unlimited (see Resources). The mobile gateway is similar to the domain name in an e-mail address. The mobile gateway is different for each cell phone service provider.

    • 3

Open a browser window and enter the web address for your e-mail account in the address bar located at the top of the window. Log into your e-mail using your user name and password.

    • 4

Click "New Message" or "Compose Mail" to create a new text message.

    • 5

Enter the recipient's cell phone e-mail address. The cell phone e-mail address will be the 10-digit cell phone number (at) the mobile gateway, plus a URL address separated by the "at" sign. For example, a Nextel customer's cell phone e-mail address would be 1234567890@messaging.nextel.com.

    • 6

Enter the subject and message in the appropriate fields.

    • 7

Click "Send" to deliver the message to the recipient's cell phone.

Tips & Warnings

  • Messages that are longer than the 160 characters allotted by most cell phone companies may be truncated.
