How to Fix a Wireless Problem With My Laptop

Your laptop computer can easily connect to the World Wide Web with the help of wireless Internet. This makes it easier for you to email and chat on your laptop while you move from one place to another. However, just like any technological device, the wireless connection for your laptop is prone to a few problems. You need to know how to properly troubleshoot your laptop and its connection to determine how to accurately repair it. This process only requires taking a few steps.

Instructions

Check your laptop hardware to ensure it is compatible with your wireless router. Your wireless adapter should at least be 802.11b/g. Laptops less than two years old should have this type of adapter. Check your external adapter such as your PC card, and look at the bottom of your device.

Select your "Start" menu from the desktop, right-click on "My Computer" before selecting "Properties." Select "Hardware" menu once the Properties menu pops up, and click your "Device Manager" menu. Look for something marked as 802.11b/g WLAN. If you see it, this means you are using the right hardware for connecting your wireless router.

Go back to your "Start" menu, select "Control Panel" and go to "Network Connections." Continue by right-clicking on the icon for "Wireless Network" and selecting "Properties." You should see three tabs for the window for Wireless Network Connection Properties. Choose "Internet Protocol" before clicking on "Properties," allowing you to connect to a network.
