DIY: Garage Insulation

If you've decided you want to heat your garage, there's no point in doing that unless you're also going to insulate it. In most cases, insulating a garage is easier than other insulation projects, because garages tend to have open-stud walls, making it a simple matter of setting it in place between the studs. Most stud walls, including garage walls, will be 16 inches on center, meaning you'll need standard 14 1/2-inch-wide insulation, but measure the stud distances to make sure. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the wall inside the space between two studs, from the top of the floor plate to the bottom of the ceiling plate.

    • 2

Roll out a strip of paper-backed insulation, with the paper side facing toward you. Pull the tape measure out next to it, to the length that you measured on the wall.

    • 3

Set your square over the surface of the paper, and press it down. Run your utility knife alongside the square, cutting through the paper and the fiberglass below it. Cut it all the way through.

    • 4

Wedge the cut piece of insulation onto the wall, between the two wall studs, with the fiberglass facing the wall and the paper facing into the room.

    • 5

Secure the insulation by shooting staples through the thick strips of paper at the outer edges of the paper backing, and into the studs. Shoot them into the sides of the studs, not the front. Put the staples about every foot along both vertical sides. Use your utility knife to cut the insulation around any electrical outlets or other obstructions.

    • 6

Repeat the process to fill each space between every pair of studs on the exterior wall.

Tips & Warnings

  • Wear gloves, goggles and a particle mask when handling fiberglass insulation.
