How to Clean George Foreman Grills

The traditional George Foreman Grill, also known as the George Foreman Lean, Mean, Fat-Reducing Grilling Machine, is designed for quick food grilling and cleanup, and features nonstick, removable plates that help prevent food from clinging and burning to surfaces, and drip trays to collect fat and grease as it drains from the grilling food. Additionally, each grill typically includes a plastic spatula to scrape away any food or grease that might stick and a carved sponge for cleaning. As a result, cleaning the grill typically doesn't take much time or effort. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug your George Foreman Grill. Wait for it to cool.

    • 2

Fill a sink with hot water and mild dish detergent -- enough to make the water soapy. Place your grill's sponge in the water. If you don't have the grill sponge, place a lint-free microfiber cloth in the water.

    • 3

Grasp the top handle of the grill and open it to reveal the removable plates.

    • 4

Scrape food particles and grease from the lower grill plate into your drip tray with your grill's plastic spatula. While holding the top handle, wipe debris and grease from the top plate with paper towels. Dispose of the food and grease from the drip tray, and any trays used while grilling, and the dirty paper towels into your trash when finished

    • 5

Remove the plates from your grill.

    • 6

Wash the parts -- spatulas, drip trays and plates -- in the top rack of your dishwasher on the normal cycle, or piece by piece in a sink of soapy water with the grill sponge or microfiber cloth. If you're washing the pieces by hand, rinse each piece thoroughly under running water or rinse out the sponge or cloth and wipe away the soap residue. Air-dry the spatula and drip trays; wipe dry the plates with paper towels.

    • 7

Rinse the soap from the sponge or cloth and wipe the cord -- excluding the electrical plug -- and exterior of the grill. If necessary, add a drop or two of detergent to the sponge to wipe away food or stains, and then rinse the sponge and wipe again. Dry thoroughly with paper towels.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you're washing the parts by hand and need to remove tough stains or buildup from a removable plate, scrub the plate gently with a nonabrasive nylon scrubbing pad.

  • Never use abrasive cleaners or tools on your George Foreman grill -- especially steel wool or metallic scrubbing pads.

  • Never immerse the grill in water to clean it -- you can permanently damage the grill's electrical components.

  • The grill can accidentally close -- potentially resulting in injury or damage to the grill -- if you don't hold the top of the grill open by the handle while cleaning.
