1
Use sturdy boxes in graduating sizes as cake stands. Make sure the boxes are shaped like the cake. For example, if the cake layers are square, use square boxes. For a whimsical look, use square boxes with round cake layers but ensure you add good support to the cake so that it does not tumble down.

2
Wrap the boxes in wrapping paper that matches the colors, theme and design of the cake and the wedding. This lends a uniform look to the cake and makes it visually appealing. Try to use thick paper that will not dissolve with the cake's moisture.

Place the largest cake layer on the cake plate. Place the largest wrapped box on top, making sure it is in the center of the cake. Try to press it down in the cake at least 1/4 inch so it sits well.

Place a small amount of frosting on top of the box before placing the next cake layer. This will lend some stability to the cake. Continue placing the wrapped boxes and cake layers until you place the topmost cake layer. Place the cake topper on top and add finishing touches to the cake with borders or ribbons, as per the cake design.

Tips & Warnings
Use flatter boxes rather than taller ones so the cake layers rest in a stable manner.
Transport the cake carefully if assembled. Preferably, assemble the cake at the wedding venue so that it does not have to be moved around too much.
