How to Remove Animal Skin

How to Remove Animal Skin thumbnail
Take care for preservation when skinning an animal.

Outdoor skills often are not taught in schools. The methods for skinning fur-bearing animals have been passed down from generation to generation. Modern outdoorsmen are conscientious about their craft to preserve and maintain proper care of game. Skinning any animal uses the same procedure for the preservation of the fur. All that is needed is a sharp knife, some stout cord or rope and a tree. In less than 30-minutes, its possible to skin large or small game animals.

Instructions

    • 1

Tie the rope around the animal's neck. Throw the other end of the rope around a tree limb about 10-feet above the ground. Hoist the animal up as high as possible or until the animal's neck is about eye level.

    • 2

Cut off all four feet or hooves, using the hacksaw, approximately 6 inches above the point where the fur terminates at the feet.

    • 3

Make a cut from the animal's neck straight down the belly. Cut around both sides of the genitals. Make cuts down the inside of all four legs from the belly cut to the point where the feet were cut off.

    • 4

Make a circular cut around the animal's neck all the way around to the top of the belly cut.

    • 5

Pull down on the skin with your hands starting from the animal's back at the top of the spine. Work your way around the circular neck cut, pulling down on the skin.

    • 6

Work the knife blade between the skin and the carcass, cutting away any adhesion between the skin and the carcass, as you pull down on the skin. Grab the skin on the inside of the legs one at a time and pull the skin away from cut on the legs.

    • 7

Pull down on the skin as the skin on the legs comes free. Cut away any remaining adhesion at the bottom of the carcass. Cut off the tail. Pull the skin free from the carcass making any necessary cuts to free the skin from the carcass at the bottom and the tail.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use the sharpest knife you have. If it's not sharp, sharpen it before trying to skin an animal.

  • For small animals you do not need to hang them up. The procedure for skinning is exactly the same as a big animal.

  • If the animal is not gutted first, use extreme care to not puncture the intestines of the animal. It's best to gut the animal before skinning it.
