Moving your modular home to new location requires a reputable and experienced transportation company and preparation by the home owner.

Moving a modular home from one site to another can be a smooth transition if you've completed the prep work involved, contracted with a reputable mover and done your research regarding zoning and ordinances.

The most difficult parts of the move will fall on the transportation company you've hired. Make sure you use a mover who has experience, can provide references and is willing to stand behind his work.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove all valuables, boxes, small pieces of furniture and as many large pieces of furniture as you are able. Your home should travel as empty as you can get it. Unless you've contracted differently, as the homeowner, you are responsible for any overweight tickets the driver may incur and for the loss of any valuables during transit.

    • 2

Tape all mirrors, windows and doors. Secure all cabinet doors with tape or string. Tape the doors on all appliances closed.

    • 3

Remove all skirting and underpinnings before your mover arrives. Move any vehicles or play equipment that may block access to your home. Remove any items stored under your home, such as lawn mowers or weed trimmers.

    • 4

Remove window flower boxes and air conditioners. Remove pictures from the walls. Remove your TV antenna or satellite dish.

    • 5

Hire a professional electrician and plumber to disconnect your utilities. Call your providers and discontinue your service.

    • 6

Disconnect and remove any propane bottles.

    • 7

Tape your moving permit securely to the outside of your home, unless otherwise instructed by your moving company.

    • 8

Rely on your movers to do their job. Once all of your prep work is done, your movers will arrive to split your modular home, cover both sides with heavy plastic and hook one or both halves up to their haulers. Smaller companies may have only one hauler which requires a return trip to take the second half of your home. Try to contract with a moving company that can take both sections at one time.

A flag vehicle will lead the procession that moves your modular home to alert oncoming motorists to the approach of an oversize load.

Observe the re-assembly of your home if at all possible. If you've contracted with a reputable company that employs a knowledgeable staff, they will efficiently block, level and reattach the two pieces of your home in such a way that you will never know they traveled separately.
