How to Use an Amtrak Exchange Voucher

How to Use an Amtrak Exchange Voucher thumbnail
Exchange vouchers can be used toward future purchases.

Amtrak riders with paper tickets who wish to cancel or change their reservations are faced with two options: pay a 10% penalty for a refund, or be given a full-value exchange voucher redeemable for other Amtrak services. Although these exchange vouchers operate like cash, they can only be redeemed at an Amtrak ticket counter. Vouchers aren't redeemable through the Amtrak.com website, through telephone bookings or with a ticket collector on board the train.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose your destination and departure time from a current Amtrak timetable. You can access the timetable through the Amtrak website, by calling 1-800-USA-RAIL (1-800-872-7245), or in print at the train station.

    • 2

Present your exchange voucher at the time of booking your ticket at the Amtrak ticketing counter. The exchange voucher value is determined when you apply for the voucher and will be noted on the front of the document.

    • 3

Pay the difference. If the price of your new ticket exceeds the value of your exchange voucher, you must pay the balance. But if your ticket cost is less than the value of your exchange voucher, you must forfeit the rest of the voucher and won't receive a refund of the difference.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be careful not to lose the paper exchange voucher. Amtrak won't issued you a new one or a refund.
