How to Remove a Rear Wheel Speed Sensor on a 1998 Dodge Dakota
The rear wheel speed sensor in a 1998 Dodge Dakota is designed to measure the speed of the rear wheels and relay this information to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). The PCM uses this information to calculate the speed of the rear wheels and make decisions about when to engage the anti-lock brake system. When this sensor fails, the PCM cannot effectively actuate the ABS system or determine the speed of the vehicle. Replacement rear wheel speed sensors are available from auto parts stores and licensed Dodge or Chrysler dealerships.

Shift the Dakota's transmission into "Park" (automatic transmission) or first gear (manual transmission). Set the parking brake and chock the rear wheels.

-
3
Use a metric box-end wrench to disconnect the rear wheel speed sensor's electrical connector by removing the metric steel bolt holding the sensor to the differential.
-
4
Remove the sensor from the differential using a twisting/pulling motion.
