How to Install Microsoft Outlook Express

How to Install Microsoft Outlook Express thumbnail
Installing Outlook Express doesn't need to be confusing.

Outlook Express is typically packaged with Microsoft Windows Millenium Edition (Windows ME) operating system as well as multiple other operating systems. The program is designed for the typical user to read and send emails. The program can obtain email via post office protocol 3 (POP3), Internet mail access protocol (IMAP) and simple mail transfer protocol (SMTP). Outlook Express also supports full HTML email. Different protocols simply determine whether your emails are stored on your computer or on the email server. Outlook Express makes it easy to import your email settings and messages from other services. It also allows you to set up multiple email accounts.

Instructions

  1. Downloading Outlook Express

    • 1

Download the Internet Explorer installer from Microsoft. Outlook Express does not have it's own installer and is typically installed during the Internet Explorer installation.

    • 2

Insert the installation disk for Microsoft Office 2000 if it is available. Microsoft Office 2000 has an option to install Outlook Express with its suite of office software.

    • 3

Obtain all the following information: the kind of email server your provider uses, this will usually be POP3, HTTP, or IMAP; the incoming email server's name.

If your email server is POP3 or IMAP, then you will also need the name of your outgoing email server. You can find all of this information from your email provider.

    • 4

Write down your user name and password, and whether your ISP or email provider requires secure password authentication. You can find this information by contacting your provider.

    • 5

Open the Outlook Express program. Along the top, click the "Tools" menu, and then click "Accounts."

    • 6

Click "Add," and then click "Mail." This will start the Internet Connection Wizard. Enter the name you would like email recipients to see as the sender. Click "Next." You can use any name you like in this field--there are no rules. Enter your email address on the next pages. Click "Next" again.

    • 7

Enter your email address on the next page and click "Next" again. Enter the email server information. You should have gathered this information earlier. If you have trouble finding this information, check the help pages for your email provider, or contact your Internet service provider directly. Click "Next."

    • 8

Enter your user name and password. This is the same user name and password that you would use to access your email account. You may or may not need to include your entire email address, but often it is simply the part before the @ symbol. Choose whether to allow the mail server to remember your account's password. Click "Next," and then "Finish".

Tips & Warnings

  • Test your email account by sending an email to a friend and having that friend email you. If your email account is not functioning properly, repeat the process and be sure that everything is entered correctly.
