Three-D artists can create background images with their program's texture tools.

Three-D programs such as Blender and Art of Illusion have several tools that let users make their virtual objects look as realistic as possible. One set of tools lets users create textures and materials from digital photos. These texturing tools provide a practical way of creating background images for your 3-D program. Setting a background image for a program provides many benefits, including providing a means to trace an existing object to create a new object from.
