How to Install an HP Recovery Disc on HP DV 8300 CTO

Hewlett Packard introduced the HP DV8300 CTO laptop just prior to the release of the Windows Vista operating system. For that reason, the laptop shipped with both Windows XP and Vista configurations. If you are having major Windows problems with a DV8300 CTO laptop, using the recovery CD to reinstall Windows and the original software can help in many cases. Although the laptop was shipped with different versions of Windows, restoring the operating system is the same for both configurations.

• HP system recovery discs (optional)
• External hard drive or USB flash drive

Instructions

Recovering from the Hard Drive Recovery Partition

1. Turn off the DV8300 laptop, then power it back on. As soon as you see the HP logo screen, press the "F11" key on the keyboard.

2. Wait for the HP Recovery Manager utility to start. When prompted to back up user files to an external device, ensure that you have an external hard drive or USB flash drive connected to the laptop, then follow the prompts to back up the files. If you do not want to back up user files, click the "Skip" button.

3. Click the "Yes" option on the confirmation screen when asked if you are sure that you want to restore the DV8300 CTO laptop to factory defaults.

4. Wait for the HP Recovery Manager utility to reformat the main partition on the hard drive and reinstall Windows and other default software.

5. Press any key on the keyboard when prompted to restart the HP DV8300 CTO laptop. Once the computer reboots, allow it to boot into Windows normally. Follow the on-screen prompts in Windows to personalize settings and configure your laptop for use.

Restoring the laptop with Personalized Recovery CDs

1. Power on the computer, and immediately insert the first recovery CD into the optical drive of the DV8300 laptop. When prompted, press any key on the keyboard to boot from the CD/DVD drive.

2. Wait for the recovery CD to copy files to your laptop's hard drive. It may take several minutes for the utility to copy the files needed to start the recovery process.

3. Click the "Advanced Options/System Recovery" option, then click "Next" to start the Recovery Manager.

4. Follow the on-screen instructions to back up data files to an external drive or device. Alternatively, click "Skip" if you do not want to save the files.

5. Follow the directions on the screen to reinstall Windows to your main hard drive partition. The Recovery Manager will then reinstall Windows and other default software. Click any key to restart the computer after the recovery process finishes.

6. Allow the DV8300 to boot into Windows, then follow the on-screen instructions for personalizing the computer. Reboot the computer if prompted to do so.

Tips & Warnings

• Do not attempt to restore the DV8300 CTO laptop without first connecting the AC adapter. If you do so, and the battery dies during the recovery, the restore process will fail.
