My Vista Internet Explorer Won't Open the Norton Page

Viruses can significantly alter the behavior and functions of Windows Vista, and can even prevent Internet Explorer from accessing certain websites. If Internet Explorer fails to load the web page for Norton AntiVirus, a virus could be the culprit.

Before assuming that malicious software is the source of the problem, however, confirm that your computer can connect to other websites and that Norton's web server is not down.

Instructions

    • 1

Check your Internet connection. Launch Internet Explorer and go to Google, Yahoo! and Bing to confirm that your computer can access a variety of websites.

    • 2

Enter "downornot.com" into the address bar of your browser. Press "Enter." Type "Norton.com" into the search field. Press "Enter" to check the status of the website. If Down or Not lists the Norton page as "Down," you will have to wait until the server is up again to access the site.

    • 3

Restart your computer. Hold down the "F8" key to access a set of advanced startup options. Use the directional pad or arrow keys to choose "Safe Mode with Networking" from the menu. Press "Enter."

    • 4

Connect to the Internet. Launch Norton AntiVirus from the desktop or Start menu. Select "Run LiveUpdate" from the "Computer" pane.

    • 5

Click "OK" when updates are complete. Click "Manual Scan," then click "Comprehensive file scanning (recommended)."

    • 6

Check the option "Scan within compressed files." Click "OK." Choose "Scan for Viruses" from the options in the left pane.

    • 7

Double-click "Scan my computer." Norton AntiVirus will search your computer for any infections preventing you from accessing the Norton website.

    • 8

Repair, quarantine or delete the virus. Restart Windows Vista and re-scan your computer to confirm all traces of the virus are gone.

    • 9

Launch Internet Explorer and attempt to navigate to the Norton AntiVirus page. If you still are unable to connect, download a different third-party anti-virus application to your computer, such as Microsoft Security Essentials, McAfee VirusScan or Kaspersky Anti-Virus. Scan your computer with the third-party application and remove any detected infections.

Tips & Warnings

  • Before running any antivirus software, check the "Security" tab in Internet Explorer's "Internet Options," accessible from "Tools." Click "Restricted sites." Click "Sites." Confirm "Norton.com" is not in the list.

  • If you are unable to access the websites for McAfee, Kaspersky or Microsoft, use a different computer and download one of the above antivirus' installers to a removable storage device (e.g. USB, CD or DVD).
