How to Make Hollywood Decorations

Though party stores stock plenty of cheap Hollywood-party items, it's easy to make them yourself, even if you aren't the craftiest of souls. From red carpets, stars and statuettes to popcorn, tickets and movie posters, you can find plenty of movie icons to fill any party.

Red Carpet, Photos and Movie Posters

  • Give your guests the red-carpet treatment. Just unfurl a 3-by-8-foot piece of red fabric out your front door. Find black-and-white publicity photos of 1930s movie stars online; print them, and cut them into star shapes and tape them on the wall. If you have a good color printer, print small versions of old movie posters; otherwise, print out black-and-white posters.

Cutout Stars and Film

  • Purchase or borrow a hole-puncher for star shapes and punch away on colorful construction paper, making hundreds of little stars to spread on all the tables. Take one piece of nonflammable paper with a few stars cut out of it, and put it next to a desk lamp to project stars on the wall or ceiling. Be sure not to get it too close. Though film is rare these days, your local photo store may have old negatives that you can use for table decorations.

Famous Quotes, Silent Movies, Pizza and Popcorn

  • Print out famous movie quotes, such as: "They call me Mr. Tibbs," or, "You talkin' to me?" in appropriate fonts and put them on the walls or tables. Have a contest to see if everyone can name not only the movie but the character who says each line. Give out statuettes as prizes. Download a public-domain silent movie and have it running in the background on the TV or, better yet, on the wall via a projector hooked up to your computer. Use a star-shaped cookie cutter to cut up pieces of pizza, and, of course, have plenty of popcorn on hand.
