Advanced registered nurse practitioners (ARNPs) provide routine assessments, prescribe medicine and perform uncomplicated procedures for patients in medical offices. While their services are invaluable, sometimes it is necessary to terminate an ARNP's employment. Depending on the contract agreed to when employment commenced, there are steps you can take to terminate an ARNP.

      Read the employment contract between physician and ARNP. According to Steven M. Harris, a law partner at McDonald, Hopkins in Chicago, there are usually one of two termination agreements: "with cause" and "without cause." Depending on the reason for termination, the employer may have to document poor performance, reduced ability to perform job duties or criminal behavior.

      Gather poor performance reviews and documentation stating that the ARNP can no longer perform certain duties. You can also gather evidence of fraudulent or criminal behavior. These documents are necessary if the contract states that the ARNP can be terminated only "with cause." Hospital budget cuts and a dwindling client base, however, can also be used to layoff an ARNP who has a "with cause" contract.

      Give the appropriate notice of termination. Harris recommends that an ARNP being terminated through no fault of her own or "without cause," be given 30 days notice. "With cause" termination doesn't require any notice, but Harris recommends giving the person at least five days.

      Inform the ARNP of any restrictive covenants. Generally the ARNP cannot actively solicit patients from her old employer, or work within a certain distance of the old practice for a predetermined length of time.
