How to Install Hinges on an Interior Slab Door
The majority of hinges can be used on a door opening in either direction. However, read the packaging of your hinges to be sure that this is the case. Some hinges are manufactured to be used specifically on a left or right hand door. To find out what type of door you have, stand in the hall and open the door. If the door swings in towards the right, it needs a right hand hinge. If it swings to the left, it will require a left hand hinge. Does this Spark an idea?

- Hinges
- Utility knife
- Chisel
- Hammer
- Center punch
- Drill
- 1/8-inch drill bit

Measure the door 5 inches down from the top and 10 inches from the bottom up. Mark these measurements on the side of the door with a pencil.

Place the top edge of the upper hinge on the pencil mark. Make sure the inner edge of the hinge is flush with the side of the door. Trace around the hinge with a utility knife.

Place the bottom edge of the lower hinge on the pencil mark. Put the inner edge of the hinge flush with the door and trace around the hinge with a utility knife.

Score the outlined hinges on the door with a chisel to weaken the wood. Use a hammer to pound the chisel into the wood the thickness of the hinge. Scrape away the wood inside the outline of the hinges so that when the hinges are placed in these holes, they will be flush with the surface of the door.

Place the hinges in the spaces and mark the holes with a pencil. Remove the hinge and mark the middle of each hole with a center punch.

Drill out the holes with a 1/8-inch drill bit. Place the hinges back on the door and install the screws. Tighten the screws slowly so that the hinges do not move out of place.
