How to Install Harmonics Flooring

Harmonics flooring is a brand of glueless, ``floating'' flooring that is made with real wood (some are vinyl), and is designed so an average home owner can install it. As with all floating floors, it installs without glue or nails. The floor is held together by a tongue-and-groove connection system along the sides of the boards, with floor trim holding down the perimeter. Let the boards acclimate to the local setting for a few days before installation. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the floor trim from throughout the room, using your hammer and prybar. Keep it intact as you remove it. Pull out the nails and set it aside.

    • 2

Use your table saw to cut the tongues off the long sides of all the Harmonics flooring planks that will be in the first course of the floor. Also cut the tongue off the short side of the plank that will start the row.

    • 3

Roll out a length of plastic underlayment along the side of the floor where you want to start.

    • 4

Lay the first plank (with the tongues cut off the long and short sides) in the corner, with the two cut sides facing the two walls. Put plastic shims between the plank and the walls. Clip the remaining planks of the first row together, end to end, with the cut sides facing the wall and shims creating a space there.

    • 5

Cut the final plank on your miter saw to fit against the ending corner.

    • 6

Set the subsequent courses in place, connecting them alongside the first course and staggering the ends of the boards so they don't line up between courses. Cut the tongue off the short side of the board that starts each course, and cut the last board in each course to fit against the wall on the other end.

    • 7

Length-cut the final course of boards, on your table saw, so there is a 3/8-inch gap between the boards and the ending wall.

    • 8

Reinstall your floor trim, using your hammer and trim nails. The trim will hide the gaps by the walls.
