How to Rip Audio From a Homemade DVD

A homemade DVD contains an audio track as well as video---both of which are stored separately on the DVD. To make a copy (or "rip") of the audio from a DVD you have made yourself, use an audio editing program. There are a number of these programs available, with the majority of them free of any cost. The audio editing program will let you save a copy of the audio track from the DVD onto the computer's hard drive.

Instructions

    • 1

Download an audio editing program to the computer's desktop, for example, the free Audacity program or the no-cost Free Audio Editor 2010, or the free Power Sound Editor Free. Double-click the file once downloaded to start the installation process. Follow the menu commands to finish the installation. Restart the computer.

    • 2

Launch the audio editing program by selecting it from the "Start" > "All Applications" pop-up menu. Eject the disc tray of the DVD drive. Place the homemade DVD on the disc tray and close the tray.

    • 3

Click the "File" icon at the top of the program's main screen. Select "Open" from the drop-down menu. Double-click the icon of the DVD that is in the left column of the window that appears.

    • 4

Click the "Tools" or "Options" icon at the top of the program's screen. Select the "Audio" tab at the top of the new screen that appears.

    • 5

Select "44, 100 Hz, 16-bit-Stereo" from the "Resolution" drop-down menu beneath the "Audio" tab. Click the "Apply" button. Click the "OK" button to return to the program's main screen.

    • 6

Click the "Record" button on the program's main screen to start recording the DVD, which is now playing. Click the "Stop" button when the DVD has finished playing to stop the recording.

    • 7

Click the "File" icon at the top of the program's main screen. Select "Export" from the drop-down menu. Name the recording you are about to save in the "Name" column at the top of the window that has appeared. Select "Desktop" from the "Locations" drop-down menu at the middle of the window. Click the "Save" button at the bottom of the window.

    • 8

Quit the audio editing program. Eject the disc tray and remove the DVD. Close the disc tray.
