Obtaining a German Passport in USA
Traveling internationally requires German citizens to have a current, government-issued passport. The passport will act as a proof of citizenship overseas that allows entry into foreign nations and also allows for re-entry into Germany. Obtaining a German passport in the US requires a few documents, a fee and applying in person at the appropriate German consulate.

- Two passport photos
- Original birth certificate
- Copy of original birth certificate

Set up an appointment at the appropriate German consulate, of which there are nine in the US that can be found using the German Consulate Finder.

Complete the application form either at the consulate or at home.

Show your birth certificate, current German passport and any applicable documents at the appointment, presenting copies as requested.

Provide two identical, biometrically compatible color photos. They must be recent and exactly 3.5cm by 4.5cm.

Submit any other necessary materials along with the application fee.

Tips & Warnings
German passports must now be applied for in person at the consulate, as they include biometric data, such as scanned fingerprints.
Apply well in advance of when you will need your passport, as processing time may vary and will usually take at least a month.
Photos should only have a white background and the photographer should be informed it will not be the standard US size of two inches by two inches.
Only cash or money order payments are accepted at the consulate.
