How to Put Wire on Braces Bracket

How to Put Wire on Braces Bracket thumbnail
Braces sometimes need repair.

Wires are an integral part of braces that are responsible for straightening teeth. Occasionally the wire on braces can become damaged or come loose from the brackets. This can be uncomfortable, but it is quite simple to repair. Sometimes, though, you may need to see your orthodontist.

Instructions

    • 1

Push the wire gently back in to the slot that sits on the brace's brackets. Newer self-ligating braces work in much the same way as traditional braces do except that they have a clip that helps to hold the wires loosely in place.

    • 2

Slide the clip to the correct position to hold the wire down, if the braces have a clip feature. If the wire has broken and is sharp, the eraser end of a pencil or tweezers can be used to help guide the wire without scratching fingers, gums or cheeks.

    • 3

Rinse with mouthwash or gargle with salt water to prevent infection, in the event that wires have caused sores. It is possible for a loose brace wire to scratch and cut the inside of the mouth.

Tips & Warnings

  • If the loose wire has created sores, apply ice to help reduce pain and swelling. A variety of numbing creams can be applied to help ease pain; consult with an orthodontist to determine what will work best.

  • Avoid cutting the wire. This is dangerous and could potentially result in accidental ingestion or inhalation. If the wire has been ingested it will be naturally passed through the body as a bowel movement. If it becomes more difficult to breathe, this may indicate that the wire has traveled into the lungs and medical attention is required.
