English walnuts, also known as common walnuts, are a source of omega-3 fatty acids. They are known as a powerful brain food. Besides being eaten raw, English walnuts can be cooked. Since they can be bought preshelled, whole or chopped, the possibilities are endless when incorporating walnuts into your cooking. Does this Spark an idea?

  • Aluminum foil

  • Fork
  • Eggs
  • Sugar
  • Cinnamon
  • Salt
  • Vanilla extract
  • Light corn syrup
  • Butter

Instructions

  1. Baked Spiced English Walnuts

    • 1

      Preheat oven to 225 degrees. Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil.

      Combine an egg white with a tablespoon of water in a bowl using a fork. Mix until foamy. Add 2 cups of chopped or whole walnuts into the mixture. Pour into a strainer and drain for 2 minutes.

      Toss the coated walnuts with a half cup of sugar and a tablespoon of cinnamon while still in the strainer. Shake the strainer to get rid of excess sugar.

      Dump the walnuts onto a baking sheet. Bake the nuts for an hour. Stir the walnuts with a spatula every 15 minutes to ensure they cook evenly.

      Remove the nuts from the oven. Cool. Store cooked walnuts in a jar.

      Preheat oven to 400 degrees.

      Beat together three eggs, 3/4 cups of both sugar and light corn syrup, a pinch of salt, 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract and 1/4 cup of melted butter in a large bowl.

      Add a cup of chopped walnuts and stir well.

      Pour the mixture into a pie crust. Bake for 10 minutes at 400 degrees, then turn the oven temperature to 300 degrees and bake for 25 minutes.

      Remove the pie from the oven. Cool for 30 minutes before serving.
