Careers in the solar industry are growing as state and federal incentives for green industry increase, particularly in the state of California, according to a 2009 Occupational Outlook Quarterly article. Whether you already have a degree in engineering or are looking for an occupational change, becoming a solar panel contractor may be the right choice if you are looking to join the green industry workforce.

1. Attend a trade school or a university and receive a degree in engineering. Research and study the processes of solar panel installation, the green energy industry and photovoltaic elements to gain an advantage over your competitors and in receiving your certification.

2. Enroll in a North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners (NABCEP), or equivalent agency, solar panel installation certification course. Choose a course that is designed for contractors and those in leadership roles.

3. Apply and work as an intern or entry-level worker at an established solar panel installation company to get experience and learn from seasoned installers who are capable of further teaching you the ins and outs of the job.

4. Gain admission to a solar panel installation training program by completing a written exam, signing written agreements and paying any applicable fees for admission.

5. Complete the training program, which will range from between 12 and 30 hours in total, and where you will learn about solar panel installation, system designs and photovoltaic systems. Take and pass the exam at the end of your course, proving your abilities as a solar panel installer and providing you with certification.

6. Apply for a solar panel contractor job with a resume that highlights your abilities and certification.
