How to Find the Certificate of Authenticity for Microsoft XP

Microsoft's Certificate of Authenticity (COA) is used to prove that the piece of software you purchased is an authentic version of the program. COAs are used for Windows operating systems, as well as other Microsoft programs such as Microsoft Office. Even if you buy a computer with Windows or Office pre-installed, you will receive a COA so you know that it is genuine.

Instructions

    • 1

Pick up the box or packaging your Microsoft software came in, if you purchased it separately. Look at the top of the box for a blue seal. The seal has three bar codes, the product code and metallic thread on the side.

    • 2

Check the side of the box if you have a DVD case. The label is a large rectangle wrapping around the side of the DVD case. This label has a single bar code, blue-green background lettering and a metallic label on the side.

    • 3

Turn your laptop computer over or look at the back or side of a desktop computer, if Microsoft products were pre-installed on your computer. The label should be affixed directly on the computer. The labels may come in different colors and have a bar code, serial number and product key.
