Video-editing programs range in complexity from novice to professional, so finding the right software to meet your needs and skill level is key. Fortunately, most video-editing programs offer a free trial period, so you can try out a program before you buy it.

Instructions

  1. Windows Live Movie Maker

      Go to the Windows Live Movie Maker 2011 website. Download and install the program. Note that if you have Windows 7, this program is already installed on your computer.

      Open Windows Live Movie Maker. Click on the "Add videos and photos" button in the upper left part of the screen. Windows Live Movie Maker is capable of editing MP4 files.

      Find the MP4 video you want to edit. Click on it to highlight it, then click "Open." This will add the video into the story board.

    Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum

      Go to the Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD download site. Click on the "Download" button in the middle of the page. Install the program.

      Open Vegas Movie Studio HD. If you do not want to purchase the program at this time, click on the radio button next to "Run the trial version of Vegas Movie Studio HD 9.0," and click "Next." Then, follow the prompts to register the program.

      Go through the new project wizard to create a new project file.

      Use the menu in the upper left quadrant of the screen to locate the MP4 video you want to edit. Double-click on it to add it to the story board. Vegas Movie Studio HD is capable of editing MP4 files, but you must have Apple QuickTime installed on your computer.

      Click on "File" in the upper left part of the screen, go to "Insert Media File to Timeline" and click on "Insert Video." Locate the MP4 video you want to edit, click on it to highlight it, then click "Open" to add the video to the story board. Corel VideoStudio Pro X3 is capable of editing MP4 files.

Tips & Warnings

  • Windows Live Movie Maker 2011 is a free program and designed for novice users and basic video editing. The other two programs, Sony Vegas and Corel VideoStudio, are not free, but are capable of more advanced video-editing.
