How to Change My User Name on Twitter
Twitter is a social networking website where users post micro-blog posts of 140 characters or less, and read similar posts by other users. You must register in order to use Twitter, and each registered user must have a unique user name of 15 characters or less. User names on Twitter must be alphanumeric with no spaces, though underscores are also allowed. This is the name to which all your replies, direct messages and data are delivered. However, a Twitter user name never needs to be permanent; if a user wants to change her user name, she can do so easily at any time.

1
Sign in to your existing Twitter account. From the home page, click on the "Settings" link in the upper right hand corner. This will take you to a screen with several tabs across the top. The default landing page for the "Settings" link should be the "Account" tab. The second field down on this page will be the "Username" field. It will be the first field in which you can type, as the "Name" field, displayed directly above, cannot be changed from this tab. Click anywhere in the "Username" field and backspace over your current user name.

2
Choose your new Twitter user name and type it in the now-blank "Username" field. The Twitter system will automatically tell you whether this user name is already in use by another user. If it is already taken, you will get a red message next to the "Username" field informing you that the name isn't available. If the user name is available, you will get a message in green font next to the "Username" field telling you to proceed. If your first choice in names isn't available, experiment with minor differences, such as an extra letter or an underscore between words, until you get the green go-ahead message.

Scroll down to the bottom of the "Account" page when you are satisfied with your new Twitter user name. Find the "Save" button -- this may be harder than it sounds, as it's quite faintly delineated and isn't distinct against the background. Locate the "Save" button between the "Tweet Privacy" field and the link to deactivate your account. Click "Save" to implement your new Twitter name. The change is instantaneous, and you can begin posting on Twitter with your new user name immediately.

Tips & Warnings
Let your followers know in a tweet that you have a new user name. If your new name is unrecognizable from your old name, your followers may not know it's you.
