1
Take classes. If you have not yet done any financial recordkeeping for a business, then you'll want to take classes in accounting at a local community college or online. You don't have to be certified or have a degree to be a bookkeeper, but being familiar with bookkeeping software and accounting methods will be helpful.
-
2
Purchase a computer, desk, printer, fax machine and other office equipment you find helpful. Some of these items you may already have, which will help keep investment costs down.

3
Create an office in your home. Don't worry about renting office space right away. You'll keep costs way down, if you work from home.It doesn't have to be a whole room dedicated to the purpose. It can be corner for a desk and a filing cabinet. You can install a separate telephone line or buy a separate cellphone for your business needs.
-
4
Choose a name for your business and make sure you register it with your state and your municipality. Find out if you need any other permits to run an office from your home, or to hang out a sign, if you want. Most municipalities only require permits for home businesses if there are parking needs or health department issues (for a restaurant, caterer or child care provider).
-
5
Write a list of the services you can offer, like balance sheets, accounts receivable, custom reports, general ledger maintenance, daily money management or tax preparation.
-
6
Develop marketing materials like a business card, brochure and website. Place your list of services, contact information and your experience on these materials.
-
7
Put the word out that you're in business. Let your friends and family know. Send letters or emails to business owners you already know and let them know what services you offer. If you are more familiar with certain types of businesses, like medical offices or restaurants for example, start out by approaching them.
-
8
Decide on your rates. If you are unsure of how to price your services, call other bookkeepers to find out what they charge.
