How to Connect an Above Ground Pool Pump
When it comes to installing a pool pump and filter for an above ground pool, if you think of the filtration system as an integral part of a huge loop, the installation process seems that much simpler. In essence, the dirty water leaves the pool, enters the pump, goes into the filter to be cleaned, and is released back into the pool. The pool pump is a portion of the filtration system that suctions the water from the pool and the filter is the part that cleans it. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Place the filter on even ground close to the power source. Because there are internal rotating parts in a pool pump, it's important that the pump is situated on level ground to prevent vibration and instability.
-
2
Attach a hose from the pool filter outlet the to the pool's intake. The outlet is where the cleaned water leaves the filter and enters the pool. If your pool hoses are of the screw on type, apply Teflon tape to the male and of the hose prior to tightening the connection.

Connect another hose from the pool skimmer to be pump intake. The intake is located in front of the pump basket. If your pool has a main drain, you'll need to purchase an adapter that allows both the skimmer and the main drain to attach to the pumps intake. The adapters are inexpensive and you can purchase them at just about any pool supply store.

4
Open the air valve at the top of the pool filter. Pool filters can only operate efficiently once they have successfully created a vacuum environment inside the filter. Opening the air now allows the trapped air to escape when the filter is first turned on.
-
5
Check to see that there is water in the pump filter basket. Usually, if there is water in the pool and you attach the skimmer and main drain to the pump intake, water will flow into the pump basket. If this has not happened, loosen the pump basket lid. This will allow the water to flow into the pump. Tighten the lid once the pump basket has water in it.
-
6
Plug in the pool filter and turn it on. When the water level in the filter reaches the air valve and begins to spray out, shut the air valve.
-
7
Observe all of the pool hose connections for leaks. If you detect a leak, shut off the filter and tighten the connections.
