How to Make Potholders Out of Pantyhose

How to Make Potholders Out of Pantyhose thumbnail
Colorful pantyhose or tights will make a decorative pot holder.

Do-it-yourself enthusiasts can make pot holders at home with a simple loom available from any craft store. The loom uses loops of fabric to create the pot holders. Pantyhose are the perfect material for creating these pot holders because you can cut them into pre-made loops. You can create a pot holder from any color pantyhose, or use two pair of different color to create a patterned pot holder. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • 2 pairs of pantyhose, varying colors
  • Scissors
  • Plastic pot holder loom
  • Weaving hook
  • Crochet hook

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the pantyhose into 1 inch wide loops. You need 36 total, so cut 18 from the first pair and 18 from the second pair. Take the loops from the area from the calf to the thigh, so they are roughly the same size.

    • 2

String the loops of the first pair of pantyhose onto the loom in the vertical direction. Slide the top of the loop over the first peg and then slide the bottom of the loop into the corresponding peg at the bottom of the loom. Repeat across all 18 pegs.

    • 3

Slide the top of the loop of the next pair of pantyhose into the first horizontal peg. Use the weaving hook that came with the loom to thread the loop over the first vertical loop, then under the second, then over the third. Continue until you reach the end and slide the loop over the corresponding horizontal peg.

    • 4

Attach the second loop to the second horizontal peg and begin threading it under the first vertical loop, then over the second. Attach it to the corresponding horizontal peg when you reach the end. Continue alternating the "over, under" then "under, over" pattern with each horizontal loop until you finish all 18.

    • 5

Pull the first loop from the top left corner off the peg. Pull the loop to the right of that one off its peg, as well. Insert the crochet hook through the first loop and use it to pull the second loop through the first.

    • 6

Pull the loop to the left of the first one off its peg. Use the crochet hook to thread this third loop through the second one. Repeat this all the way around the potholder. When you get to the last loop, tie a small knot to secure it. The pot holder will now be free of the loom and ready for use.

Tips & Warnings

  • The project works best with opaque hose or tights.
