A citation is a reference to a published or unpublished source of information that must be listed when used as a resources in scholarly writings. The two most common forms of citation are Modern Language Association (MLA) and American Psychological Association (APA.) Both have specific formats for including information for citation in the references section of a paper or written work. You can cite a television show using a few basic rules.

  1. MLA Stile

      Write the name of the episode with quotation marks around it. Example: "Cake-eaters: People Who Love Cake."

      Write the name of the series, underlined. For example: _Human Cake Eating Machines!_

      Write the the name of the network, and then the station and location of the station if applicable. For example: Cake Eating Network, Channel 24, Mississippi. Note--If the channel is a cable channel and not a network affiliate you do not need to cite the channel and the location of the affiliate.

      Write the date the show was broadcast in "Day, Month, Year" format. For example 24, Sept., 1990. The finished product should look like: "Cake Eaters: People Who Love Cake."_Human Cake Eating Machines!_Cake Eating Network. Channel 24, Mississippi. 24, Sept., 1990.

    APA Style

      List the last name of the author of the show followed by a comma, then list the first name. Example: Pieeater, Berry.

      List the year of original airdate in parentheses, Example: (1998).

      List the title of the episode followed by the name of the director in parentheses, Example: Doughnut Eaters Anonymous. (Cakemuncher, Judy).

      List the name of producer and then the production company if applicable. List the title of the program in italics. Finally list the city, network and local station if applicable. Croissant, David, (Delicious Pastries Productions). (Italic) All the Sweets in the World Baby. Yummystuff Network, Greenbay, Station 23.

      Review your citation. The full citation should look like: Pieeater, Berry (1998). Doughnut Eaters Anonymous. (Cakemuncher, Judy). Croissant, David, (Delicious Pastries Productions). (Italic) All the Sweets in the World Baby. Yummystuff Network, Greenbay, Station 23.
