How to Set up an Office Network With a Static IP Address

Dynamic IP addresses are the typical way to assign the configurations to each computer, but you can also assign static IP addresses. Static IP addresses are manually configured in the system settings for your Windows computer, and the value persists even when you reboot the computer. This is beneficial if you have a small office network with no server or router that assigns dynamic IP addresses to your computers.

Instructions

    • 1

Click the Windows "Start" button and then click "Control Panel." This opens a new configuration window. Click "Network and Internet" and then click "Network and Sharing Center." This is the main window where you set up your network settings.

    • 2

Right-click "Local Area Connection" and click "Properties." This opens a configuration window. Click "Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)" and click the "Properties" button under the list of protocols.

    • 3

Click the option labeled "Use the following IP address." Type your static IP address the you want to set up for the local computer. Under the IP address settings, type the subnet mask and default gateway. These are pre-populated in the text boxes, so you can also leave the default values.

    • 4

Click the "OK" button to save your changes. Repeat these steps for each computer on your office network.

Tips & Warnings

  • Each computer on the network must have a unique static IP address, so ensure the values you enter are different for each computer.
