If you like customizing your iPhone, you may want to add a new ring tone. Many ring tones are available for purchase from the iTunes Store, but you can also create your own using music that you already have. You don't even need to sync your iPhone with your computer to acquire ring tones; you can download or create them directly on your smartphone.

Purchase

Tap the iTunes Store icon on your iPhone's home screen.

Tap "More." Tap "Ring Tones."

Browse for ring tones. Tap the button with the price next to the one you want. Tap it again when it turns green.

Choose to set the ring tone as your default ring tone or a ring tone for a specific contact, or just tap "Done." Enter your Apple ID and password. The ring tone downloads to your ring tone folder.

Create

Tap the App Store icon on your iPhone's home screen.

Tap the "Search" button. Type "Create Ringtones" in the search bar and press "Search."

Tap "Create Ringtones!" in the list of apps displayed. Tap the "Free" button. Tap it again when it turns green. Enter your Apple ID and password.

Tap the "Ringtone" app on your home screen when the progress bar for the download disappears. Choose to create a ring tone from a recording or from songs you have stored on your iPhone.

Name the ring tone and set the time, which must be under 30 seconds. If you are recording, tap the button with the dot; then tap it again to finish. Tap the check mark to listen to a preview. Tap it again to create the ring tone.

Tips

You can set ring tones through "Settings," then "Sounds," and then "Ringtones." You can also set ring tones for specific contacts by tapping a name in "Contacts."
