How to Find a Multimedia Audio Controller Driver

When upgrading your Windows operating system or the sound card in your PC, you may run into a problem with the audio. Windows installs drivers for the sound card in order to recognize the make and model of the card being installed. Outdated or incorrectly installed drivers can cause some problems. If you see an error message referring to a multimedia audio controller, then you may need to verify that the correct drivers for your sound card are installed on your computer.

Instructions

    • 1

Click "Start," then "Control Panel." Click on "System and Security." Click on "Device Manager" under the "System" list.

    • 2

Double-click on "Other devices" to expand the list.

    • 3

Right-click on the device named "Multimedia Audio Controller" and select "Properties." If you do not see your audio device listed here, check under "Sound, video and game controllers."

    • 4

Click on the "Driver" tab and click "Driver details." The current drivers installed for your sound card device will be listed here. The Windows folder where the drivers are located will also be reported.

Tips & Warnings

  • If a yellow exclamation point appears next to the audio device, you will need to update the drivers for your sound card. Refer to the user manual or other documentation accompanying your sound card product for details on performing driver updates.
