How to Repair No Sound on a MacBook

Sometimes your MacBook may not produce sounds. Signs that your Mac doesn't have sound include a disabled symbol that appears on the sound icon as you adjust the volume of your laptop and a blinking red light from the audio output port. Before you decide to replace your laptop with a new one, there are simple tweaks you can do to fix the problem yourself. You don't even have to take your unit to a service center.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off your MacBook and remove the battery adapter so that there is no electric current going through your computer.

    • 2

Wipe off the left side of the computer where the earphone jack is located with a dry, clean, lint-free cloth.

    • 3

Aim the nozzle of the can of WD-40 just in front of the earphone jack. Let the nozzle touch the entry of the hole where the earphone plug would normally enter the computer. Squeeze a gentle, quick squirt of the WD-40 into the hole.

    • 4

Wipe away any WD-40 that drips on the laptop case and slowly plug in your earphones into the jack.

    • 5

Rotate the earphone jack in the hole clockwise for about 20 seconds and then remove the jack.

    • 6

Replace the laptop adapter on the left side of the computer. Turn the MacBook on and open an audio file to check the sounds of your laptop.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be careful when putting your earphones in and out of the computer. Do not yank or tug. Pull it straight out.

  • If your computer still has AppleCare, contact the nearest Apple store or call 1-800-275-2273.
