How to Encrypt an XML File

Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a type of file format that stores data like a text document. Therefore, XML files can be opened and edited by any text editing application, which makes it a widely used file format to transfer data over the Internet. If you want to make the contents inside an XML file more secure, you can use the Windows Encrypting File System (EFS) in Windows 7 and Windows Vista to do the task.

Instructions

    • 1

Right-click the XML file that you want to encrypt.

    • 2

Click on the option labeled "Properties."

    • 3

      Select the tab labeled "General."

    • 4

Click the "Advanced" button on the bottom of the "Properties" dialog box.

    • 5

Check the box next to the option labeled "Encrypt Contents."

    • 6

Click "OK" and then click "Apply." The Windows Encrypting File System will automatically encrypt the XML file.
