How to Boil an Egg Without Electricity

How to Boil an Egg Without Electricity thumbnail
Boiled eggs are easy to cook outdoors even without electricity.

Food that are simple to make in your home kitchen, such as boiled eggs, can seem like a daunting task when cooking outdoors. This is especially true when there's no electricity. Fortunately, you can still boil that egg using a camping stove or charcoal grill. The grill may be a bit slower to reach a boil than electricity, but propane from the camp stove heats in the same amount of time.

Instructions

  1. Boiling An Egg On A Grill

    • 1

Fill the base of your charcoal grill with charcoal. Squirt lighter fluid over the coals and light with a lighter.

    • 2

Pierce the fat, round end of the egg with a pin. This releases air pressure that builds inside of the egg as it cooks. Piecing the end of the egg keeps it from cracking while cooking.

    • 3

Place the egg into a saucepan and fill with enough cold water to cover it, if cooking hard-boiled eggs. Place the egg into the water after it starts boiling, if making soft-boiled eggs, using a spoon to make the transfer. Add 1 tsp. of salt to the water to help in peeling the egg when done.

    • 4

Place the saucepan on top of the grill rack when the coals are slightly flaming and almost turn reddish-gray.

    • 5

Remove the saucepan to the side of the grill and out of the flames once the water starts boiling, allowing it to simmer. Cook the egg for approximately six minutes for soft-boiled and 10 to 12 minutes for hard-boiled.

    • 6

Place the cooked egg into a bowl of cold water allowing it to cool before peeling.

Boiling An Egg On A Camp Stove

    • 7

Set the camp stove on a flat surface that is stable. Situate the stove in an area out of the reach of children or pets.

    • 8

Pierce the fat, round end of the egg with a pin.

    • 9

Place the egg into a saucepan and fill with enough cold water to cover it, if cooking hard-boiled eggs. Place the egg into the water after it starts boiling, if making soft-boiled eggs, using a spoon to make the transfer. Add 1 tsp. of salt to the water to help in peeling the egg when done.

    • 10

Turn the camp stove to the "On" position and light with a lighter. Place the saucepan holding the egg on top of the camp stove burner and turn the heat control knob to the high position until the water starts boiling.

    • 11

Turn the heat control knob to low after the water begins boiling and allow the egg to simmer on top of the burner. Cook hard-boiled eggs for approximately 10 to 12 minutes and cook soft-boiled eggs for approximately six minutes. Remove the egg from the saucepan when done and place into a container of cold water until the egg cools before peeling.
