How to Locate a Main Internet Server

How to Locate a Main Internet Server thumbnail
Locating a server on the Internet takes only a little research.

Web pages are hosted on servers which "serve" these pages via the Internet. When you browse a website, you are accessing this server, which delivers the pages or files to you through a vast network of similarly connected servers. Although you connect to the Internet locally, the main server hosting the website could reside anywhere in the world. To locate this server geographically, you need only look up the domain.

Instructions

    • 1

Enter the domain name on the Visual Trace Route Tool on the You Get Signal website. This site takes the domain name, looks up the IP address and traces the Internet path to the website's server. The site displays the data visually, so you see the geographical location of the server and the path the information took.

Check the domain at Flag Fox's Geo Tool. Essentially, this tool offers similar functionality as the previous tool. However, they also offer a Firefox extension that displays the website's country flag in the status bar which allows you to easily determine the server locations of sites you visit.

Enter the domain on 81 Solutions' Server Location Lookup tool. This site offers the final pictures of where the server resides without the trace route of individual nodes.
