How to Create an Internet Gateway in Windows XP

Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) in Windows XP lets you use your computer as an online gateway. The computer hosts the Internet connection device and other machines on your network use it to gain access to websites online. This is a convenient configuration for small home networks. Windows XP has this option in its network configuration settings. You set up ICS, reboot the computer and it automatically registers as your client computer's Internet gateway.

Instructions

    • 1

Click the Windows XP "Start" button. Click "Control Panel." Click "Network and Internet Connections" in the Control Panel window and then click "Network Connections."

    • 2

Right-click your network adapter and select "Properties." In the opened window, click the "Advanced" tab.

    • 3

Check the box labeled "Allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet connection" in the "Internet Connection Sharing" section.

    • 4

Click "OK" to save your settings. A window opens explaining that the computer's IP address changes to "192.168.1.1." Click "Yes" to confirm the changes.

    • 5

Reboot your computer. After you reboot the host ICS server, you must reboot your client computers, so they detect and connect to the Windows XP gateway computer.
