How to Remove a Windows XP Key

Your Windows XP activation key is what provides Microsoft with proof that you have a legitimate copy of the software and a legal license to use it. Without a valid activation key, you cannot receive vital system updates from Microsoft that will help to keep your system secure. However, if you need to remove your activation key for some reason -- to change it for instance -- you will need to make a change to the system registry.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the "Start" menu and click "Run." Type "regedit" in the "Open" box and press "Enter."

    • 2

Navigate to the key "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\Current Version\WPAEvents" in the left pane of the registry editor.

    • 3

Right-click on "OOBETimer" in the right pane. Select "Modify."

    • 4

Change any digit in the "Data value" box to deactivate Windows and remove the current key.

Tips & Warnings

  • Only perform this process if you have a legitimate reason to do so; removing your key will cripple your copy of Windows XP if you do not install a new key.
