How to Enhance a Wireless Modem

You can modify the network router to increase performance.

Weak signals can cause slow Internet performance. Your computer's wireless modem communicates with your network to serve Internet pages and provide access to other resources. Unfortunately, wireless networking is susceptible to a number of interferences, including household appliances, cordless telephones and the structure of your building. Luckily, there are several options that can assist with enhancing the wireless modem signal that will improve access.

Instructions

1. Move the access point or router to a central location. If your computer has difficulty with weak signals, it could be interference from a number of sources.

2. Install a new hi-gain antenna. You can purchase an antenna for between $20 and $200, as of September 2010. The antenna allows you to point the wireless signal in one direction. Remove your router's antenna and insert and screw in the new antenna to the port.

3. Download and install updated software for your router. Visit the router manufacturer's website, select your device under "Downloads" or "Support." Follow the instructions to complete the installation.

4. Replace the modem. Contact a PC support technician and request information about replacing your computer's modem. This can be a costly replacement, especially on laptops.
